NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)

Updated: Jun 3

Welcome To My World!

So, I'm Tash, a Registered Nurse who is now an NLP Master Practitioner and Usui Reiki Practitioner. I was curious about NLP and I love learning, so off I went to learn more. It has opened more doors than I could possibly have imagined and has increased my curiosity and willingness to learn at least 10 fold! I have now opened my own wee business from home, integrating all my conventional medical knowledge, with my more recent NLP and Reiki Practitioner skills, to provide a more holistic approach with the focus on health and wellness. In doing so, I soon realised it can be challenging to explain in a nutshell what I do, especially what NLP is, so I'll give it my best shot.

What Is NLP?

NLP is.....

  • A way of understanding how the mind works and how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are influenced by our past experiences.

  • A set of tools and techniques that can be used to change unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviours, and to achieve desired outcomes.

  • A communication and personal development model that helps people understand how they use language and behaviour to create their reality.

The Association for NLP defines it thus:

“NLP combines theories, models and techniques from a range of scientific and esoteric fields, to create accessible, understandable ‘tools’ which can be used by individuals, teams and organisations and applied in a variety of contexts to improve outcomes, support wellbeing and create change”.

A literal translation of the phrase 'Neuro Linguistic Programming' is that NLP empowers, enables, and teaches us to better understand the way our brain (neuro) processes the words we use (linguistic) and how that can impact on our past, present and future (programming). It gives us strategies for observing human behaviour and learning from the best (and worst) of that!

Simply put, change is possible - all you need is a desire to change and a willingness to learn new ways of being…with yourself, your thoughts and with others.

NLP can be useful in health, wellness, and chronic pain in a number of ways, including:

  • Helping people to manage their pain by changing their thoughts and beliefs about pain, and by learning relaxation techniques.

  • Improving people's self-esteem and confidence, which can help to reduce stress and improve overall health.

  • Helping people to change their behaviours in ways that promote health and well-being.

  • Teaching people how to communicate more effectively with their doctors and other healthcare providers.

Here are some specific examples of how NLP can be used to help with chronic pain:

Reframing: This technique involves changing the way that people think about their pain. For example, someone who might typically think of their pain as "unbearable" could be taught to reframe it as "a signal that my body needs attention."

Imagery: This technique involves using mental images to help people change their perception of pain. For example, someone who might typically focus on the physical sensations of their pain could be taught to imagine their pain as a ball of light that is slowly shrinking.

Hypnotherapy: This technique can be used to help people relax and access their subconscious mind, which can then be used to change unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour.

It is important to note that NLP is not a substitute for medical treatment. However, it can be a very helpful complementary therapy for people who are experiencing chronic pain and/or illness.

NLP Is Not....

  • Therapy

  • Psychotherapy

  • Psychology

  • Psychoanalysis

  • Counselling

  • Clinical Therapy

  • Pseudoscience!

It is also not something you have ‘done to you’. It involves guidance and teaching of tools that you can use to achieve better outcomes for yourself. Be that in health, well-being, communication, relationships, or your professional life. It takes curiosity and effort and practice and perseverance. You absolutely get out what you put in.

Stay tuned for future blog posts linking the studies, science and research to positive outcomes.
